Professor Nikolaos Stergiopoulos (Switzeralnd)
Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) Founder/Cofounder of EndoArt SA, Comphya SA, Rheon Medical SA
Lecture title:
Modeling and Analysis of Wave Phenomena in the Arterial System: From Pure Science to Inverse Modeling and AI-Driven Applications
The lecture will begin with an overview of our early work on modeling arterial wave propagation. I will then discuss how these models have been used to improve our understanding of wave propagation phenomena and ventricular–arterial coupling. The second part of the lecture will focus on inverse modeling, demonstrating how non- invasive peripheral measurements, combined with arterial models, can be used to estimate central cardiovascular quantities of clinical interest. I will conclude by presenting some of our latest research on AI-driven applications for cardiac output and central blood pressure monitoring.
About the speaker
Professor Nikos Stergiopulos received his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, and his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Iowa State University, USA, and also holds a degree in Management of Technology from IMD. He is Full Professor and Director of the Laboratory of Hemodynamics and Cardiovascular Technology at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne, Switzerland. His research focuses on hemodynamics, cardiovascular mechanics, arterial wave propagation, ventricular–arterial coupling, and the noninvasive estimation of central cardiovascular parameters using mathematical models and AI-driven approaches. He has authored more than 250 peer-reviewed publications and is an inventor on over 25 medical technology patents. Alongside his academic career, he has co-founded several successful medical technology companies, including EndoArt SA, a pioneer in telemetrically powered implants, and Comphya SA, developing implantable electrostimulation devices. He is also the founder and CEO of Rheon Medical SA, which develops innovative glaucoma drainage implants for the surgical treatment of glaucoma.
Professor Bojan Jelaković (Croatia)
President, the Croatian Hypertension League and the International Society for Vascular
Health
Lecture title:
From Data to Bedside: Risk Calculators in Vascular Ageing and Hypertension – Highlights from Croatia
Risk prediction is transforming the prevention and management of cardio-kidney-metabolic
diseases. In this keynote lecture, Professor Bojan Jelaković will discuss the development and
clinical application of risk calculators, highlighting Croatian experience and their role in
vascular ageing and hypertension.
About the speaker
Professor Bojan Jelaković, MD, PhD, FESH, is Full Professor of Internal Medicine at the
University of Zagreb School of Medicine and Head of the Department of Nephrology,
Dialysis, Arterial Hypertension and Transplantation at the University Hospital Centre Zagreb,
Croatia. He is President of the Croatian Hypertension League and the International Society
for Vascular Health; and one of Europe’s leading experts in hypertension, vascular ageing, and cardiovascular prevention. His research has made major contributions to the
understanding of Balkan nephropathy, and he has authored hundreds of scientific
publications. A frequent invited speaker at international congresses, he was elected a Full
Member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in recognition of his outstanding
contributions to clinical medicine and cardio-kidney-metabolic research.
